The railway station in Chamonix

Chamonix is accessible by train from e.g., Lyon or Paris (TGV). The trains stop at St.Gervais which is situated about 20 min from Chamonix. From St.Gervais you can take the "Chamonix train", which will, via a steep but very scenic ride, take you to Chamonix.
